So sad for me, that almost no one wants Shikkoku no Sharnoth ~what a beautiful tomorrow~ :'( Anyway, I was happy when I saw such a solide list to choose (:

There is translator for this already. He is a beginner though and he doesn't have a team yet...

Well, that's the beauty of all this ; almost every single game in the list is beyond great. Except maybe some of the more "shounenesque" ones, there's not one I wouldn't play if translated. That actually makes the whole voting kind of fun since it's more some kind of loto, where you can only win great prizes. The proxy stuff is quite pointless, it's like hacking at a lan party between friends...

That's not to say we don't each have our favorites, but honestly I doubt most of us know much about those game beyond a quick summary and a few pics, which can be deceiving. Personnaly I like complex and lenghty games so here I go Never7, I/O and Kara no shoujo. I've started playing Ayakashi too, looks great - but to me the japanese was quite hard to understand sadly. I just hope that games such as H20 or Air wont get translated - not because they aren't good, but because they got an anime and are relatively simple to follow, while some other games are totally unknown in spite of being pure jewels.

Just thinking about it makes one feel powerless, like, you know, "I so wish I had a better japanese so I could work and translate another of those". Maybe someday... *goes back to learning kanjis*

Yeah, and that's why sometimes I think that I could start learning kanji or kana instead of just learning how to speak :p
And I tottaly agree that all VN in the list are really great and worth for translating.

P.S. Wow, it's so strange that I missed that the translation of SnS have already started. Heh, it's really great news for me! :)
And then it was running and running and running and running and...

For eroge playing knowing only kana is pretty much worthless I think... I have yet to found one that didn't ooze with horribly strange kanjis ! Knowing kana is fine for reading manga though, since most have furiganas above almost every kanji (but then sometimes the "font" used is horrible, especially if you're reading raw scans where the quality is too bad to decypher the furiganas).

Deleted some of the more obvious abusers (somewhere in the number of 10-15). I'll probably leave the rest since I highly doubt it would change the end result of the preliminaries. The mail server is back up though so activation is enabled again, and the next polling part will be better (I never expected the forums to do a good job of protecting against the faggots who thought they were cool).

For some laughs, here's a report I got overnight:

Just wondering, but when will the final voting phase start? Is it going to start in few days or are you going to take small break before you put it up?

Yes, small break, because we still don't have the complete CC patch out. Gotta keep our priorities straight.

Not a bit deal yet, but I feel I should point out just in case that Yandere Translations (http://yandere.gray7.com/) Is considering Swan Song as one of their next projects. Just felt I should bring it up in the highly unlikely scenario that you both end up picking it.

Neko brought it up yesterday.

However, since it seems unlikely Takajun will be making a decision anytime soon, the plan is simply to go ahead with the poll.  If it looks like we really are going to "steal" a project from him, I'm sure he'll speak up, and we can come to some agreement then.

I was surprised at how short the poll was active. It felt like this thread with candidates ran for weeks if not months, and then the voting started and was over before I even heard of it. Would it be possible to run the next poll longer perhaps? I don't know if I was in a minority or a majority of people who just weren't at the right place at the right time for voting, but it doesn't seem like it would hurt with a bit longer poll. (Unless it gives people too much time to spam proxy posts)

A break until the actual poll is definitely a good idea. It'll give people (especially those who've put off starting till the full patch) a chance to read Cross Channel and get an idea of what a well-written Visual Novel is like. As well as a chance to experience your skills as a translator (and group).

Once the poll has been completed I'd like to recommend that you keep the results temporarily private. To give yourself a chance to read the winner and make sure it's within your standards of quality. I know you said you'd check anyway, but not revealing the results immediately would help you avoid any compulsion from the voters. For example, MuvLuv almost won last time and yet you recently decided you would place it lower on the priority list as there's many better out there. If it had won initially (and had been hacked at the time) you may have felt like you had to translate it because it won and overall is a decent game (I'm assuming).

I'm a bit sad that I/O didn't make it to the finalists. I think I'm going to have to put my full support behind Saihate no IMA. Still, many of the finalists also look good so I'm sure I'll have something great to read at the end of it.

Anyone wanna explain Never7's popularity? I'd heard Never7 and 12Riven weren't quite the same standard as Ever17 and Remember11. I/O, as a well-received story by the same scenario writer as Ever17, seems like the more logical choice. Am I ignorant of something here?

No one cares to downvote Never7 so it rises to the top10 steadily. Probably they vote just because the Infinity series gimmick, not knowing the experience is less than Ever17 or Remember11's multifold trolling.

The poll hasn't even started yet. What you saw was the preliminary polling which was to figure out what games to put in the real poll.

Well since it isn't translated, it's hard for most of us to know much about Never7 ; so as you'd expect there isn't much reasonning beyond "I liked Ever17" behind that choice. I wouldn't call that choice "uninformed", just superficial. Like I stated earlier, most of the voters have very little real info regarding the final translated novel true quality ; that's part of the fun ! I mean, my criterias when chosing a VN are like "so this one is by the author of Kira kira, and I thought that one totally fell flat, so I'll pass", or "wow the same studio as Ever17 ! could be great", or "I've played the beginning of that one, the production values seem high so it might be worth a try". Some of us also have played hundreds of VNs, watch most anime and have a basic grasp of japanese, while others may only know Da cappo and Shuffle.

Haven't been told anything bad on Never7, I had a friend fetch me a copy some time ago but never really tried it ; for those who played it, do share your infos !

I guess I/O is probably the better game though, I had a quick read through earlier and it seems really massive, and I quite like the art.  But it was probably amongst the most unknown games on the list sadly, so it didn't get voted as much ! The OP is quite beautiful too.

ZeroBlitz spoke much truth too ; and surely the most important point in chosing a translation is that the translators really like it. I know I always end up slacking on my TLing when I don't like the book I'm working on, though that may be just me :D
Overall like I wrote, this "VN contest" to me is more of a game and an occasion to share about fellow VN readers. I've discovered quite a few "hyped" titles I have yet to play in this contest, and I'll be getting them when I have the occasion, that's plenty enough for me. In the end, the good games will be translated or my japanese will pick up, whichever comes first.

I'll be playing CC in the coming days, only did the first week as of now but the TL work was very well done. The story is indeed a bit confusing at first, and the charas not all instantly likable ; not particularly a fan of the art (yet), but anyways I'm a sucker for good plots so I'm ready to get hooked once it starts moving ! :)
