VN Translation Vote Candidate
« on: July 13, 2009, 02:17:40 AM »
I made this list personally to help as reference for the planned vote "what vn we should translate next." The qualifications for whether specific titles can make it as a candidate for the final vote are:
    1. Ixrec (our lead translator)'s impression of the game (requires him to play or at least try the game himself)
    2. engine accessibility: can it be hacked? is it already?
    3. script length: extreme script size/length are undesired
    4. preexisting translation project: any running translation project for this game?
    5. licensing probability: any chance for commercial translation?
    6. popularity: is it known or talked regularly over the English speaking internet community?
    7. opinion from those who have played the games

Translation difficulty isn't an issue, since Ixrec enjoys challenging himself. The titles are separated to six groups:
    1. Primary vote contender: cleared the qualification of point 2-7 above
    2. Non popular: believed to be worthy titles, but might not be able to gather enough vote because it's not popular enough
    3. Unlikely because of length, difficulty, or quality: a title might be so popular but actually not that good or favorable for translation project, etc
    4. Already has a starting project or already being translated: known for being translated, even when the actual information regarding some projects are obscure/stalled/dying. Expect this one to be filtered off the list first
    5. Possibility of getting licensed: point 5 above
    6. Potential hot future projects: not released yet, so forget about demanding any translation for these
    7. Thread recommendation: additional titles recommended by poster in this thread or other sources

Basically these titles will be filtered through discussion at this thread or our IRC channel (#Ammy@irc.rizon.net); how many titles will make it into the vote, etc. Genres (most have drama so I won't include it), pros, cons, links to English-language reviews and other details will be filled in later.

Freed from this terrible nightmare, the people rebuilt their community and lives, prospering through the decades into modern times as a vibrant (though somewhat rural) Japanese town. Cool list. If you take suggestions, I have one for group 2 ("Non popular"):

[Light] Gunjou no Sora wo Koete

vndb erogamescape nico OP nico demo
Genre: Military, politics
Pros: protagonist with voice acting
Script Stats: 2.17MB

I think it clears qualifications 3, 4, 5 and 7 fairly easily, but I've only seen this mentioned a few times by English speaking eroge players, so 6 is out. The graphics and concept, from what I've seen in the PV, look very interesting, the few English speakers I've seen talking about this have had only good things to say about it. It also has a very good EGS median (85), if that's of any indication about how the Japanese have received it. Because of its obscurity I'm fairly certain no translation project nor license is going to pop up anytime soon. The script is not long (2.17 megabytes according to nota), but from what I've read, extremely difficult.

The only thing I don't know about is the engine. If i'm not mistaken, it has the same engine as other Light games, so if anyone has ever tried to hack some of the more popular games like Dies irae, then maybe they could tell us about it...

I'm really pleased to see SWAN SONG on the list this time around. Unless some other unexpected, more desired title appears all of a sudden (Rewrite for example), then I'd definitely vote on that.

Anyway, I wouldn't worry about the ones already having an ACTIVE translation project, as long as they don't announce it that they completely abandoned it. That's just personal opinion of course.

By the way are there any news on hacking into Muv-Luv? IIRC Ixrec said that he has someone attempting to breaking it down, but that was the last info we heard about him.
While I agree it's a great title deserving a translation, I'm somewhat hesitant of "hyping" ourselves up, and eventually discover that it's impossible to translate and be disappointed.

And Hello World! is also a Nitroplus title by the way, so it might be not the best to translate it before we know exactly what's going on with JAST/Nitroplus, and what's the reason the TLwiki had to remove N+ titles temporarily.

Any chance of getting Mindead Blood on the possible list? The translator at Darktranslations is really unlikely to do it as far as I know.

Edit: never mind, you corrected the link to the image now.

rUGP, the engine Muv-Luv runs on, is a horrendous piece of work. That said, an acquaintance of mine is able to hack it and has completed preliminary work on it. However, since no one is willing to help him with it, he would need to spend around a month reversing functions, system calls, bytecode, etc. in order to get the thing ready for translation. Add this to the fact that every Muv-Luv release has a different version of rUGP... Anyway, hacking will be completed if there's a significant motivating force (like a translation project) or if my friend finds help.

"Hello, world." is listed under the probable license category.

Translation difficulty seems to be no problem since Ixrec enjoy challenging himself.

Little hard to explain without going into a lot of detail, but while this is fine for the other games, Saihate no Ima is more than just 'difficult' to translate - it's going to require quite a lot of study to understand the concepts it goes into well enough to translate the text into English, but anyway...

Correct; it uses the malie engine. There's actually a decent amount of (Japanese-language) documentation on the engine's scripting language, courtesy of Light themselves actually! However, Gunjyou no Sora wo Koete (as well as some of Light's other things) is rather nastily encrypted, so anticipate a bit more work here than you might otherwise expect. Older Light games, like Dear My Friend, possess no such encryption.

So you reckon that hacking Muv-Luv could be definitely achieved if it'd be chosen as a TL project?
-------------
Yeah I noticed, but we could just put it into the same place where the other N+ titles are for simplicity's  sake =>
"Possibility of getting licensed
Titles from:

1. Nitroplus (Sumaga, Gekkou no Carnevale)
support JAST USA's official localizations of Nitro+ games"

--------------
By the way Moggy (I deeply apologize for nagging you about it), when we might possibly get an announcement/confirmation about the situation regarding the N+ titles? Either from yous, or JAST I mean. Repeating that forced meme kinda have the opposite effect.

Can we use this thread to suggest other Visual Novels to translate, that aren't mentioned yet? If so I would like to suggest Baldr Sky: Dive1 "Lost Memory" for translation as it's something I realy would like to see translated.

As to points that are mentioned in first post.
1: is opinion based so it's hard to say anything about.
2: I'm not hacker so I can't say, but baldr force wich was earlier game from series seems to have used older version of the same engine and that was hacked, so I would asume that baldr sky is hackable too, altough harder as it's newer.
3: I wouldn't say that it's overly long, altough it isn't too short either. I'd say it's somewhere 20-50 hours long depending on reading speed. (A lot depends how fast you accomplish the game sections too).
4: Hard to say about this, as there seems to be some sort of translation going on here, but that is Viatnamese translation and there might not be even english version coming depending on situation, they also don't even have hacker, so it's text only translation. Also it's abysmaly slow one, compared to speed that ixrecs has.
5: I doubt there is going to be anykind of licensing as nothing is heard of.
6. Baldr series has been rather popular in Japan and there's atleast every now and then small discussion threads in 4chan.
7: Well, it has generaly realy positive reactions for those who have played it. Also it has rather good score in erogamescape. Link.

Here's bit of info:
[GIGA] Baldr Sky: Dive 1 “Lost Memory”

Story (copy&paste from vndb): When Kou is asleep in his bed, a scream of a girl wakes him up. What goes on in front of him is a battle full of gunshots and flashes of bombs exploding. He also finds that he wears an iron armor. "What's this?" He doesn't know what's going on, but he gets out of the virtual world with Rain, who says she is his junior partner. They arrive a ruined city and Kou gets to know the fact he is a special shimulcrum (robot) user and graduated from his school several years ago. His lost memory that might have had a significant meaning to his life.... The name of the case that slowly appears from his memory is..., "Gray Christmas" "What is Gray Christmas? How come I was investigating the case?" He finally knows the whole story of the case and its meaning.... Peaceful life that was supposed to last forever.... It, however, ends all of a sudden....

Some personal opinions: I realy liked the story in this one and how it's told. There basically is "two" stories, story of Kous school years and present time story where Kou is mercanary chasing "something". Due to incident at very begining of the story Kou loses his memory and later start remembering bits of his memory. Normaly one would think that story that jumps between two time periods and which are rather different in feel (past being mostly usual highschool hijinks, but it foreshadows a lot of coming things too and present being rather gloomy in atmosphere) wouldn't mix, but it works surprisingly well and creates interesting story.
There's also some action game elements, this may cause problems? But I mainly would want the story translated, as the game parts are rather self-explotonary and depending on how the game menus are coded might be hard to work with or be rather heavy in image editing.

I think that was all that I wanted to say for now atleast and sorry for a bit bad english.

But anyway everything mentioned in this thread is great for translation, so whatever gets chosen for next project is all good. So keep up the good work.

I don't expect this to really affect the poll but I'll throw this out there: I already have the engine for Hoshizora no Memoria hacked. I'm still getting used to the quirks of the engine, as well as filling in the blank function names, but the tools work during my testing. http://imgur.com/2akfN.png

I wonder which one tickles Ixrec's fancy the most. I'm curious about what title he'd "vote" on (without actually trying the game of course, just basing it on the information found here and the hyperlinked reviews etc).
